Silverstone 2 Hours Race
Published August 14, 2005 in Endurance | Kyle Williams

champagneSean Edwards, Steve Warburton and Bill Barret Motorsport have taken an outstanding victory at the Silverstone GP round of the British GT Championship. The team worked so hard together to achieve this great victory and they have done it. Sean said “We can’t ask for much more, pole position, fastest lap and the GT3 win. The team has worked so hard for this and we just want to dedicate this to them. Just being able to race after what happened on Thursday is amazing!

I got a good start but at the first corner I got a big hit on the right rear from the Jones brother’s GT2 Porsche, luckily there was a safety car so I could go slow and close to the pit wall so the team could inspect the damage. Fortunately it was mainly cosmetic damage with some vibration from the right rear during the race.

I discussed with the team over the radio to leave a gap form the GT2 Mosler when the restart was given so it wouldn’t hold me up as it did on the first lap! When it started to rain it got very difficult as we stayed out on slicks. Every lap, each corner was different, I tried to take woodcote flat one lap and nearly lost it, after that I didn’t try it again!

I was talking to the team all the time trying to work out weather to stay on slicks or change to wets, we stayed on slicks for the whole race and in the end it was the right decision. I just kept the lap times consistent and the gap to 2nd place at 18 – 24 seconds. The 2nd place car made a mistake and went gravel tracking, so then I had a gap of 55 seconds.

I caught up with the white Mosler again under the wet conditions and overtook it into Brooklends. He had a huge moment on the exit and nearly spun into the side of me!!! After that I just drove for the maximum time we could do on fuel because I was used to the conditions, I handed over to Steve after about 1 hour and 20 min.

The team did a perfect pit stop and released Steve at 90.2 seconds, the team got a bollocking afterwards for being a bit too close to the mandatory 90 second stop. After Steve got in, he got used to the conditions and put in very good consistent laps to come home with a 36 seconds lead over the 2nd place car!

I have to dedicate this to the whole team as they just did an absolutely amazing job to get the car ready and get it to perform as well as it did, I can’t say enough really about them. I would also like to thank Motorbase for lending us a 75,000 pound car 10 hours before the test. Drivers who had previously tested this car had said that it wasn’t as good as the other, well seeing as we just beat all the others I think that they can take that back!

It’s a great, great moment for all of us, we hope to continue this partnership and do the whole championship next year.
